Today is the date on which Abramham Lincoln died

I am reminded by this that the first group to volunteer for the union side of the civil war was our own 1st Minnesota.

I am also reminded by this piece of history that this great president was assassinated by those who hated the federal government, and claimed to be supporting the cause of freedom when what they really were supporting was the false 'right' of a few to keep many more in slavery.

It is no coincidence that so many who do so today, with only minor differences, still cling to the confederate flag.

From American Experience, PBS:
"Let us at all times remember that all American citizens are brothers of a common country, and should dwell together in the bonds of fraternal feeling."

--President Abraham Lincoln, who died on this day in 1865
