Attention WalMart shoppers

  1. Sadly not only is Walmart an outlet for China, but so are many other stores like Dollar General and Hobby Lobby. Even worse, travel to Amish country in Indiana or Ohio and note that most of the stuff there is made in China too. Disgusting.

    1. Good to see you commenting here Muddy - hope you had a happy Thanksgiving! One of the things for which I am grateful is the people I have met through blogging - and that includes you.

  2. Speaking of Amish Country, I live up in Central New York where there are a number of Amish communities (and a fair sprinkling of Mennonites). There are several "Amish" outlets for things like sheds, lawn furniture and household furniture. The first thing I do when I get to one of those places is flip over a stool or ottoman to see the mortise and tenon joinery between the seat and the legs. I always find them secured with drywall screws.

    Two things about drywall screws.

1.) They are nearly impossible to drive into anything HARDER than drywall, without a torquey power tool of some sort.

c.) They are among the last things I would choose to fix a mortise and tenon joint as they are ugly and prone to failure.

My surmise, upon finding drywall screws in "Amish Hand-crafted" furniture is that the sellers are dealing with moronz for customers.

I do know one Amish farmer who is an electrician in the off-season. He has no electricity in his home or barn. He plows with 2-6 Belgians, depending on conditions and uses his team to haul out sawlogs and firewood from the woodlot on his farm.

I think I'll put a photo of him on my blog, later today. It will only be his right hand, holding a tomato (the Amish have a thing about graven images). It's a great photo, shows both strength and tenderness. The guy has forearms like Popeye.
